Charity Watchdog Identifies Top-Rated Disaster Relief Charities

The American Institute of Philanthropy (AIP) announces its top-rated list of charities assisting victims for major disasters, as well as hundreds of charities working on more ongoing needs in the USA and around the world. You'll find this information on its home page.

AIP is a leading charity watchdog. It issues grades of A to F to nonprofit groups, based on portion of budget going to program services and fund-raising efficiency. AIP recommends that charities spend at least 60% of their budgets on program services and no more than $35 to raise $100.

Donors Beware
Americans wanting to help should send contributions only to those charities with an established track record in this region. During a highly publicized crisis, it is common for disreputable, fly-by-night "charities" to take advantage of the public’s generosity.

Send Cash, Not Goods
The best way to help is by sending a check. Cash donations enable charities to buy the most needed type of food, medicine, clothing, shelter materials and other supplies. By buying relief products locally or regionally, charities can reduce shipping costs and more rapidly deliver assistance.

Beware of sending cash directly to overseas bank accounts. Some of these may be fraudulent. Additionally, you may not be able to receive a tax deduction for your gift.
Before sending any goods, first contact the charity to find out if they are appropriate and cost-effective to distribute. During the Bosnian War (1992-1996), 37.5 million pounds of inappropriate medication were donated.

AIP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people give wisely to charity. Its research findings have received prominent coverage in The New York Times, USA Today, Money, Consumer Digest, Kiplinger's, CNN and hundreds of other newspapers, magazines, radio and TV stations.
