How to Make the Most of Your Volunteer Experience

You’ve already taken the most important step by deciding to volunteer. Good for you!

Now it’s time to get down to specifics. How are you going to make this experience count for you and the people you intend to help?

1. Choose wisely
Pick an organization or volunteer opportunity that aligns with your passions and interests. Volunteering shouldn’t feel like just any job. It should be something you love to do, something you really care about. Many websites offer services to match you with volunteer opportunities that would be mutually rewarding.

2. Be friendly
Take the time to introduce yourself, and get to know the people in the organization. Knowing your coworkers on a deeper level can improve the quality of your work tremendously and working in a friendly environment will make volunteering all the more personally rewarding.Pathway in Brooklyn Botanical Garden

3. Remember that you are there to help
While volunteering can provide great opportunities to improve your skills and knowledge, remember that your priority is to help the organization achieve its goals. No job is too small. Everything you are asked to do has a purpose and will help the greater cause.

4. Don’t promise more than you can deliver
It is natural to want to help as much as possible. However, if you make commitments you can’t honor, you may be doing more harm than good. As a volunteer, you aren’t expected to devote all of your time. Give what you can and it will be appreciated.

5. Be Professional
Each organization has distinct rules on how to dress and how to act. However, a few basics apply anywhere.
a. Be on time. If there is a dress code, stick to it
c. Respect your peersAn unusual plant at the New York Botanical Garden
d. Be polite

6. Spread the word
Multiply your impact: Tell your friends about your great experiences and urge them to volunteer too.
