Liberals A liberal is a man with both feet planted firmly in the air. A liberal is a person whose interests aren't at stake at the moment. A liberal is a man too broadminded to take his own side in a
quarrel. A liberal is a man who is willing to spend somebody else's money. A liberal is a conservative who hasn't been mugged yet. What the liberal really wants is to bring about change which will
not in any way endanger his position. The liberal...is better at inventing reforms than in insuring that
they are well and honestly administered. The liberal is accustomed to appearing radical to conservatives,
counter-revolutionary to radicals, and as a fink to activists of all persuasions.
A man who wears both a belt and suspenders. One who is against the Democrats for what they are and against the
Republicans for what they are not. A conservative is a person who was a liberal when young and has not
changed his mind. A conservative is a fellow who is standing athwart history yelling
"Stop!" Conservatism is the worship of dead revolutions. Conservatism offers no redress for the present, and makes no
preparation for the future. The principle of Conservatism...destroys what it loves, because it
will not mend it.
A conservative is a statesman who is enamored of existing evils, as
distinguished from the liberal who wishes to replace them with others. The radical of one century is the conservative of the next. The
radical invents the views. When he has worn them out the conservative adopts them. A conservative sees a man drowning fifty feet from shore, throws him
twenty-five feet of rope, and tells him to start swimming. A liberal will throw him fifty
feet of rope, then drop his end, saying he has to go off to do another good deed.
