“We offer a wide variety
of information about the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s activities
at the United Nations. . . firmly committed to strive for peace, democracy
and durable economical development in harmony with our neighboring
countries.”
In French and English. Their few news articles
are often way out of date, but the History section offers a very accessible
account of influential figures that have shaped the nation’s past. The
Tragedy section includes provoking (though violent) photos. It also offers
glimpses into the lives of affected natives and foreigners committed to
helping the people of the DRC. It describes relief efforts and lists
organizations accepting donations. And there's info on the impact of illegal
exploitation of coltan (a mineral used in cell
phones). –CEF

I think that the resources that
The International Rescue Committee give to those in need, like refugees from
other countries fleeing because of the ongoing wars in their countries is
very generous and is truly making the world a better place. –TB

"Created in 1983 to strengthen
democratic institutions around the world through nongovernmental efforts.
Governed by an independent, nonpartisan board of directors. With its annual
congressional appropriation, it makes hundreds of grants each year to support
pro-democracy groups in Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe, Latin
America, the Middle East, and the former Soviet Union.
Guided by the belief that freedom is a universal human aspiration that can be
realized through the development of democratic institutions, procedures, and
values."

“The UN Security Council
established MONUC to facilitate implementation of
the Lusaka Accord signed in 1999. With a budget of $1.3 billion a year, it is
the largest and most expensive mission in the Department of Peace Keeping
Operations (DPKO).”
Offers up-to-date news, a detailed
account of its activities in all areas, including health care, civic
education, politics and human rights. Resources include UN documents,
publications, and maps. There is also a comprehensive audio-video section
with recent footage. Includes a list of key indicators including human
development and top ten donor nations. Although 1.3 billion is more than
anyone else is spending, it adds up to about $21 per person in this terribly
war-torn nation. More is needed! (Please see links below.) -CEF
