A surprise topic? Is it something really special… or am I just having trouble thinking of a topic?
Hint: It may be one of the most surprising things you, too, are learning about life.
Hmm, that was a tall offer, do I really have anything to back it up?
Actually, I have quite a bit to say on getting more out of life, much of it learned the hard way by making lots of mistakes.
For now, I’d like to write about a very helpful book I’m reading, listed in our Help Yourself Books, What Happy People Know by Dr. Dan Baker. He does a pretty good job explaining what makes us unhappy. He explains how we can overcome some common pitfalls to find much greater happiness and fulfillment in life.
Specifically, many studies show that a focus on our positive qualities can be far more beneficial than the traditional therapy technique of focusing on our problems and faults.
He also writes about four major mistakes people make when facing life’s challenges:
- I am a victim
- I have a right to more than I’m getting in life
- Someone else is going to rescue me from my problems
- My problems are someone else’s fault
All of those assumptions may be true. The key is change one’s attitude towards the unavoidable frustrations and setbacks in life.
Using these ideas, one can greatly improve one’s success and happiness in life. It’s working for me.
I don’t think any one self-help book has all the answers to life’s problems, but I do recommend this book highly.
What Happy People Know also recommends that you stand by what you really believe are the right things to do. So, please don’t forget:
